Two kinds of Irvine fireplace walls

Fireplace wall Where it is common Mounting into Usual wiring route
Linear gas unit, drywalled chase Great Park, Portola Springs, Orchard Hills Wood framing in the chase Builder media box and conduit, if provided
Linear gas unit, porcelain or stone surround New luxury builds Framing behind the cladding, through tile Conduit or a raceway along the edge
Brick fireplace, full height 1970s University Park and Turtle Rock homes Brick body with sleeve anchors Paintable raceway on the brick edge
Stone veneer surround 1980s–90s Woodbridge and Northwood remodels Studs or block behind the veneer Raceway or a route through the mantel side

How sleeve anchors hold on brick and stone. On a brick or stone fireplace wall the plate is held by anchors set in solid masonry, never in the mortar between it.

What the numbers show

  1. Anchor on a brick face Each anchor position is chosen on the face of a solid brick or stone.
  2. Mortar joint Mortar is weaker and can crumble, so anchors stay out of the joints.
  3. Wall plate The plate's slots let the holes move onto solid brick while the plate stays level.
  4. Bolt head and washer Tightening the bolt pulls the anchor's cone into its sleeve and clamps the plate to the wall.
  5. Expanded sleeve As the sleeve expands it presses against the sides of the hole and locks into the brick.
  6. Hole in solid brick The hole is drilled with a masonry bit to the anchor's diameter and depth, and cleaned of dust before the anchor goes in.

Heat, height and the viewing angle

A TV above a fireplace sits higher than ideal for seated viewing. A tilting mount fixes mild cases; when the screen center ends up above about 60 inches, a pull-down mantel mount lowers the TV to eye level and lifts it back afterward. The TV maker's maximum operating temperature is the limit at the mounting height; a mantel or a deeper mount keeps rising heat off the panel.

How a pull-down mantel mount works. A pull-down mount stores the TV high above the mantel and brings it down and forward to a comfortable viewing height.

What the numbers show

  1. Wall plate Fixed into the framing or masonry above the mantel; it carries the whole arm and the TV.
  2. Upper link One of two parallel links between the wall plate and the TV bracket.
  3. Lower link Runs parallel to the upper one, so the screen stays upright through the whole movement; counterbalance springs in the arm are set to the TV's weight so it moves with one hand.
  4. Path of the TV Pulled by its bottom edge, the TV swings out past the mantel's front edge and then down.
  5. Lowered position The screen hangs in front of the mantel, closer to eye level, without touching it.
  6. Adjustable stop Sets the lowest point of travel so the TV always keeps a gap above the mantel.

Heat and clearance above a fireplace. Above a fireplace the questions are where the warm air goes and how warm the wall gets where the TV will hang.

What the numbers show

  1. Fireplace opening The fireplace maker's manual lists the clearances it needs to anything above it, including a TV and the mantel.
  2. Mantel shelf A mantel deflects much of the rising warm air outward, away from the wall above it.
  3. Rising warm air Without a mantel, warm air climbs straight up the wall toward the TV.
  4. Clearance to the TV The gap from the mantel to the bottom of the TV is at least what the fireplace manual requires, often more.
  5. Wall temperature With the fire running for a while, the wall is checked at the TV's height; it must stay within the TV maker's operating temperature.

Drilling through porcelain above a fireplace

Large-format porcelain tile and slab surrounds are hard and brittle. Holes are drilled with diamond core bits at low speed with water, placed where the mount plate will cover any chip, and through grout lines where the layout allows. The anchors go into the framing behind the tile, not the tile itself.

The fireplace sets the TV's height; the mount decides whether anyone can watch it comfortably.

TV Above a Fireplace — common questions

How much does mounting a TV above a fireplace cost in Irvine?

The base range for the TV plus about $90–$140 for the fireplace install in 2026, so roughly $229–$319 for a 50–65 inch TV on a drywalled chase. Porcelain or stone surrounds add $60–$120.

Is there usually power above a new linear fireplace?

Many new Irvine homes have an outlet and conduit in a recessed media box above the fireplace. Older homes usually do not; adding an outlet is separate electrical work for an electrician.
